Performance in Education SIG Forum

Performance in Education refers to the use of activities such as roleplays, skits, process drama, readers theatre, speech, debate, oral presentations, dance, music, spoken word, rap, kamishibai, film, and podcasting in education. The Performance in Education SIG focuses on the use of these activities by teachers and students inside and outside of the classroom. The SIG Forum will feature lightning presentations (10-minute presentations) by a diverse lineup of presenters who will share their ideas and experience on the various facets of Performance in Education.

  • Chhayankdhar Singh Rathore

    Chhayankdhar Singh Rathore (he/him) is a lecturer in the Department of English for Global Communication at Konan Women’s University in Kobe. He is a practitioner of Performance in Education with a specific focus on process drama. He is actively involved with the Performance in Education SIG and the Kobe chapter and has frequently presented for the Yokohama chapter of JALT.

  • Maria Wilma Capati

    Ma. Wilma Capati (she/they) is currently an assistant lecturer at Soka University, where she earned her master’s degree in TESOL. Her research interests include gender in education, multilingualism, translanguaging, and multiculturalism. Given so, she speaks and continues to learn five languages: Filipino, Capampangan, English, Japanese, and Korean.

  • Lisa M. Hunsberger

    I’m a full-time lecturer at Kyushu Sangyo University with a Masters in linguistics, and I've been in the language and linguistics field for close to 20 years —teaching in it since 2005. I’ve taught at universities in Jamaica, at a high school in France, and at every level in Japan, from kindergarten to university, in addition to professionals and retirees. I have a special love for and enjoyment of public speaking and presentation design, and in the classroom, I use presentation software in fun and innovative ways. I've presented a lot on my work and interests, including as an invited speaker at universities and conferences in Japan and Korea. My interests include public speaking, effective presentation design, CALL, Jamaican creole, and -more recently- neurodiversity and learning challenges.

  • Beng Hwee Tan

    Beng Hwee Tan is an Assistant Professor in the World Language Center at Soka University. Having lived in Singapore, the United States, as well as Japan, Beng speaks four different languages. His research interests include Hip Hop Based Education, Inclusiveness in Education, as well as Education for Global Citizenship. Beng is also a dancer and has been actively involved in dance communities and events in California and Tokyo.

  • Darren Kinsman

    Despite years of teaching experience, Darren is a constantly evolving educator who seeks best practices through the sharing of ideas and experiences with others both inside and outside of the JALT community. His current interests include drama in education, best practices for remote teaching, and the interplay between the two.

  • Max Diaz

    Max is a Teaching Fellow with the Department of English and Communication at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is the Programme Leader for the Department's Bachelor of Arts in English and Applied Linguistics and primarily teaches linguistics and communication courses.
